It is from the sunnah of the prayer over the deceased that one says the takbīr, then sends blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ, then strives in supplication for the deceased, then gives the salām silently to himself.

machine translationAl-Layth b. Saʿd narrates it from al-Zuhrī, from Abū Umāmah b. Sahl, and Qurrah b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān followed him in narrating it from al-Zuhrī. ʿUqayl said, from al-Zuhrī, from Abū Umāmah, from a man whom he did not name, from another of the Companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ. Maʿmar also narrated it, and there is disagreement about him: ʿAbd al-Aʿlā b. ʿAbd al-Aʿlā and ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated it from Maʿmar, from al-Zuhrī, from Abū Umāmah b. Sahl. ʿAbd al-Wāḥid b. Ziyād differed from them and narrated it from Maʿmar, from al-Zuhrī, from Sahl b. Saʿd, and he erred in that. The correct version is the saying of those who narrated it from al-Zuhrī, from Abū Umāmah b. Sahl.
