When Ḥamzah was killed on the day of Uḥud, Ṣafiyyah came looking for him, not knowing what had been done to him. She met ʿAlī and al-Zubayr, and ʿAlī said to al-Zubayr: "Tell your mother." Al-Zubayr said: "No, rather you tell your aunt." She said: "What has Ḥamzah done?" They made it appear to her that they did not know. Then the Prophet ﷺ came and said: "I fear for her mind." So he placed his hand on her chest and supplicated for her. She then said "Indeed we belong to God and to Him we will return" and wept. Then he came and stood over him, and he had been mutilated. He said: "Were it not for the distress of the women, I would leave him until he is resurrected from the bellies of beasts of prey and the crops of birds." Then he ordered that the slain be brought, and he began to pray over them. Nine were placed along with Ḥamzah, and he said the takbīr over them seven times; then they were taken away and Ḥamzah was left. Then nine more were brought and he said the takbīr over them seven times, until he had finished with them.
