The sun was eclipsed in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and that was on the day Ibrāhīm, the son of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, died. The people said: "The sun was eclipsed only because of the death of Ibrāhīm." So the Prophet ﷺ stood and led the people in prayer with six bowings in four prostrations. He said the takbīr, then recited and prolonged the recitation, then bowed for about as long as he had stood, then raised his head and recited less than the first recitation, then bowed for about as long as he had stood, then raised his head and recited the third recitation, less than the second recitation, then bowed for about as long as he had stood, then raised his head and went down for prostration, and prostrated two prostrations. Then he stood and bowed three bowings before prostrating, none of them being a bowing except that the one before it was longer than it, except that his bowing was about as long as his standing. Then he moved back in his prayer, and the rows moved back with him, then he moved forward and stood in his place, and the rows moved forward with him. He finished the prayer when the sun had come out, and said: "O people, the sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allah; they are not eclipsed for the death of any human being. So when you see something of that, pray until it clears."
