In the story of Badr he said: ʿUtbah, his brother Shaybah, and his son al-Walīd came forward and said: "Who will duel?" So some young men of the Anṣār came out, and ʿUtbah said: "We do not want these. Rather, let those of our cousins from the Banū ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib duel us." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Rise, O Ḥamzah; rise, O ʿUbaydah; rise, O ʿAlī." So Ḥamzah came forward against ʿUtbah, ʿUbaydah against Shaybah, and ʿAlī against al-Walīd. Ḥamzah killed ʿUtbah, ʿAlī killed al-Walīd, and ʿUbaydah killed Shaybah, and Shaybah struck ʿUbaydah's leg and cut it off. Then Ḥamzah and ʿAlī rescued him, until he died at al-Ṣafrāʾ.
