machine translationHe was asked about the hadith of Abū al-Ṭufayl ʿĀmir b. Wāthilah, from Muʿādh b. Jabal, from the Prophet ﷺ, concerning combining the two prayers. He said: ʿUthmān b. ʿUmar was alone in transmitting it, in his narration from al-Thawrī, from ʿAmr b. Dīnār, from Abū al-Ṭufayl, from Muʿādh. Someone said, from ʿUthmān b. ʿUmar, from Shuʿbah, from ʿAmr b. Dīnār, from Abū al-Ṭufayl, and he erred in it. The companions of al-Thawrī contradicted him, among them Wakīʿ, Ibn Mahdī, ʿAbd al-Razzāq and ʿUbaydullāh b. Mūsā. They narrated it from al-Thawrī, from Abū al-Zubayr, from Abū al-Ṭufayl, from Muʿādh, and that is the correct (ṣaḥīḥ) version. It was also narrated from al-Thawrī, from Ḥabīb, from Maymūn, from Muʿādh; ʿĪsā b. Yūnus was alone in that from al-Thawrī, and it is said that he erred in it, for al-Thawrī only narrated with this chain that the Prophet ﷺ counselled Muʿādh and said: "Follow up a bad deed with a good deed, it will wipe it out," the hadith. Al-Thawrī only narrated this hadith from Abū al-Zubayr, from Abū al-Ṭufayl, from Muʿādh. Bassām al-Ṣayrafī also narrated it from Abū al-Zubayr, from Abū al-Ṭufayl, from Muʿādh. ʿUthmān b. Saʿīd b. Murrah al-Murrī al-Kūfī narrates it, and there is disagreement about him. Muḥammad b. ʿUbayd b. ʿUtbah al-Kindī narrated it from ʿUthmān b. Saʿīd, from Bassām, from Abū al-Zubayr, from Abū al-Ṭufayl, and he was not corroborated in it. It is said that he erred in mentioning Abū al-Zubayr. Others narrate it from ʿUthmān b. Saʿīd, from Bassām, from Abū al-Ṭufayl, from Muʿādh, and that is the correct version. Qutaybah b. Saʿīd narrated it from al-Layth b. Saʿd, from Yazīd b. Abī Ḥabīb, from Abū al-Ṭufayl, from Muʿādh: that the Prophet ﷺ, when he set out before the sun passed its zenith, would delay the Ẓuhr until he combined it with the ʿAṣr and prayed them together, the hadith. A group of the distinguished narrators narrated it thus from Qutaybah. Al-Mufaḍḍal b. Faḍālah narrated it from al-Layth, from Hishām b. Saʿd, from Abū al-Zubayr, from Abū al-Ṭufayl, from Muʿādh, with this very account, and that is closer to correct, and God knows best. Hishām b. Saʿd also has, from Abū al-Zubayr, from Abū al-Ṭufayl, from Muʿādh, the other hadith on combining the two prayers while travelling. Ibrāhīm b. Aḥmad al-Qarmīsīnī narrated to us: Anas b. Muslim al-Khawlānī narrated to us: Muḥammad b. Sallām narrated to us: ʿĪsā b. Yūnus narrated to us, from al-Thawrī, from Ḥabīb b. Abī Thābit, from Maymūn b. Abī Shabīb, from Muʿādh b. Jabal, who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ combined, during the expedition of Tabūk, the Ẓuhr and ʿAṣr, and the Maghrib and ʿIshāʾ. There is disagreement about Abū al-Zubayr regarding the chain of this hadith. It is said: from Abū al-Zubayr, from Saʿīd b. Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās, and that is sound (ṣaḥīḥ) from him. It is also said: from Abū al-Zubayr, from Jābir; this was said by Qurrah b. Khālid, by al-Thawrī in the narration of Isḥāq al-Azraq, and by another whom I do not remember, and by ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Thābit b. Thawbān, from Abū al-Zubayr, from Jābir. Qurrah b. Khālid, in his narration from Abū al-Zubayr, combined in this hadith the hadith of Abū al-Ṭufayl from Muʿādh, the hadith of Abū al-Zubayr from Saʿīd b. Jubayr from Ibn ʿAbbās, and the hadith of Abū al-Zubayr from Jābir. So it seems that all the versions are preserved, and God knows best.
