Muʿādh b. Jabal ؓ came to us in Yemen, a messenger of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to us. He said: I heard his takbīr at dawn; he was a man with a hoarse voice. He said: My love for him was cast upon me, and I did not part from him until I buried him in Syria, dead. Then I looked for the most knowledgeable of the people in jurisprudence after him, so I came to Ibn Masʿūd and stayed with him until he died. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: "How will you be when there come upon you rulers who pray the prayer outside its time?" I said: What do you command me, if that reaches me, O Messenger of Allah? He said: "Pray the prayer at its proper time, and make your prayer with them a voluntary prayer (subḥah)."
