That he entered upon ʿUthmān (may God be pleased with him) while he was under siege, and ʿAlī (may God be pleased with him) was leading the people in prayer. He said: "I feel uneasy about praying with these people while you are the imām." He said: ʿUthmān said to him: "Prayer is the best of what people do. So when you see them doing good, do good with them, and when you see them doing wrong, avoid their wrongdoing."

machine translationAl-Zuhrī narrated it, and there is disagreement about him. Al-Awzāʿī narrated it from al-Zuhrī, and he was followed by al-Nuʿmān b. Rāshid, al-Zubaydī and Abū Ayyūb al-Ifrīqī, who said: from al-Zuhrī, from Ḥumayd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAdī. But Shuʿayb b. Abī Ḥamzah, Isḥāq b. Rāshid and ʿUbaydullāh b. Abī Ziyād differed from them, and narrated it from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUrwah, from ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAdī. Likewise said ʿAbd al-Wāḥid b. Ziyād and Ghundar, from Maʿmar. Muḥammad b. Thawr said, from Maʿmar, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAdī, without mentioning anyone between them. Ḥammād b. Zayd transmitted it as a mursal report from Maʿmar, from al-Zuhrī, and he was followed by Jaʿfar b. Burqān, from al-Zuhrī. The ḥadīth of Ḥumayd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān is the preserved one (maḥfūẓ), and it does not rule out the ḥadīth of ʿUrwah, as al-Zuhrī may have memorized it from both of them. Saʿd b. Ibrāhīm b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf also narrated it from his father, from ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAdī; Muḥammad b. Isḥāq narrated it from him.
