When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wished to invoke against someone, or to supplicate for someone, he would perform the qunūt after bowing. Often he would say, after saying: "Allah hears whoever praises Him, our Lord, and to You belongs all praise": "O Allah, rescue al-Walīd b. al-Walīd, and Salamah b. Hishām, and the oppressed among the believers. O Allah, press down Your tread upon Muḍar, and make it upon them years like the years of Yūsuf." He would say that aloud. He said: And in some of his prayers, in the dawn prayer, he would say: "O Allah, curse so-and-so and so-and-so," referring to some tribes of the Arabs, until Allah, the Exalted, revealed: {لَيْسَ لَكَ مِنَ الأَمْرِ شَيْءٌ أَوْ يَتُوبَ عَلَيْهِمْ أَوْ يُعَذِّبَهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ ظَالِمُونَ}
