That he was in a gathering in which his father was present, who was one of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ. Also in the gathering were Abū Hurayrah, Abū Usayd, and Abū Ḥumayd al-Sāʿidī, of the Anṣār. They were discussing the prayer, and Abū Ḥumayd said: "I am the most knowledgeable of you about the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." They said: "How so?" He said: "I followed that closely from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." They said: "Then show us." So he stood to pray while they were looking at him. He began and said the takbīr and raised his hands to about the level of the shoulders. Then he said the takbīr for the bowing and raised his hands again, until he placed his hands firmly on his knees, neither raising his head nor lowering it. Then he raised his head and said: "Allah hears whoever praises Him. O Allah, our Lord, to You is the praise." Then he raised his hands and said: "Allah is the Greatest." Then he prostrated and rested firmly on his palms, his knees, and the fronts of his feet while prostrating. Then he said the takbīr and sat, resting on one foot (tawarruk) and keeping the other foot upright. Then he said the takbīr and prostrated. Then he said the takbīr, meaning he stood, and he did not sit in tawarruk. Then he returned and bowed in the other rakʿah in the same way. Then he sat after the two rakʿahs, and when he wanted to rise to stand, he stood with a takbīr. Then he prayed the other two rakʿahs. Then he gave the salām to his right: "Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah." And he gave the salām to his left as well: "Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah."

  • Abū Ḥatim al-Rāzī

machine translationThis hadith is only known from the narration of ʿAbbās b. Sahl, and it is sound (ṣaḥīḥ) from his hadith.

  • Mizzī

machine translationThe statement of the one who said ʿĪsā b. ʿAbdullāh is closer to being correct.

  • Taḥāwī

machine translationMuḥammad b. ʿAmr b. ʿAṭāʾ did not hear this hadith from Abū Ḥumayd, nor from anyone mentioned along with Abū Ḥumayd; between them there is an unknown (majhūl) man. Muḥammad b. ʿAmr is mentioned in the hadith as having been present with Abū Qatādah, but his age does not allow for that, for Abū Qatādah was killed a long time before that, since he was killed with ʿAlī, and ʿAlī prayed over him.

  • Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī

machine translationThis is how more than one person narrated it from Abū Badr. Some of them narrated it from Abū Badr and said: from Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. ʿAṭāʾ, "Mālik informed me, from ʿAbbās b. Sahl al-Sāʿidī." And ʿUtbah b. Abī Ḥakīm narrated from ʿAbdullāh b. ʿĪsā, from al-ʿAbbās b. Sahl, from Abū Ḥumayd, and he did not mention Muḥammad in its chain. The correct view is that Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. ʿAṭāʾ witnessed it from Abū Ḥumayd al-Sāʿidī.

  • Abū Ḥatim al-Rāzī

machine translationAl-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥurr narrated it from ʿĪsā b. ʿAbdullāh b. Mālik, from Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. ʿAṭāʾ, from al-ʿAbbās b. Sahl b. Saʿd, from Abū Ḥumayd al-Sāʿidī, from the Prophet ﷺ, like the hadith of ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd b. Jaʿfar. The hadith is originally sound (ṣaḥīḥ), because Fulayḥ b. Sulaymān narrated it from al-ʿAbbās b. Sahl, from Abū Ḥumayd al-Sāʿidī. My father said: So the hadith became mursal.

  • M. ibn Ḥibbān al-Bustī

machine translationMuḥammad b. ʿAmr b. ʿAṭāʾ heard this report from Abū Ḥumayd, and he also heard it from ʿAbbās b. Sahl from his father. He said: So both routes are preserved (maḥfūẓ), and their texts differ. Someone who is not well versed in the craft of hadith may imagine that the report of Abū Ḥumayd is defective, but that is not the case.
