I entered upon the Prophet ﷺ while he was performing ablution, and the water was flowing from his face and his beard onto his chest. I saw him separate between rinsing the mouth and sniffing water into the nose.

machine translationHe did not confirm it, and Ṭalḥah said: this one is said to be a man from the Anṣār, while some say he is Ṭalḥah b. Muṣarrif. Had it been Ṭalḥah b. Muṣarrif, there would have been no disagreement about him.

machine translationAbū Dāwūd said regarding another hadith of Layth b. Abī Sulaym, from Ṭalḥah b. Muṣarrif, from his father, from his grandfather, on ablution: Musaddad said: I narrated it to Yaḥyā, meaning al-Qaṭṭān, and he rejected it. Abū Dāwūd said: I heard Aḥmad say that Ibn ʿUyaynah used to reject it and say: what is this, Ṭalḥah b. Muṣarrif from his father from his grandfather? And Abū ʿAbdillāh the ḥāfiẓ informed us: Abū l-Ḥasan Aḥmad b. Muḥammad al-Ṭarāʾifī informed me, he said: I heard ʿUthmān b. Saʿīd al-Dārimī say: I heard ʿAlī b. ʿAbdillāh al-Madīnī say: I said to Sufyān: Layth narrated from Ṭalḥah b. Muṣarrif, from his father, from his grandfather, that he saw the Prophet ﷺ perform ablution. Sufyān, meaning Ibn ʿUyaynah, rejected that and was surprised that the grandfather of Ṭalḥah had met the Prophet ﷺ. ʿAlī said: I asked ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, meaning Ibn Mahdī, about the lineage of Ṭalḥah's grandfather. He said: ʿAmr b. Kaʿb or Kaʿb b. ʿAmr, and he had companionship. Another said: ʿAmr b. Kaʿb, without doubt about it. And Abū ʿAbdillāh the ḥāfiẓ informed us: Abū l-ʿAbbās Muḥammad b. Yaʿqūb narrated to us: ʿAbbās b. Muḥammad al-Dūrī narrated to us, he said: I said to Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn: Ṭalḥah b. Muṣarrif, from his father, from his grandfather: did his grandfather see the Prophet ﷺ? Yaḥyā said: The hadith scholars say he saw him, while the family of Ṭalḥah say he had no companionship.
