ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar made a contract of manumission (mukātabah) with a slave of his called Sharf for forty thousand. He went out to Kūfah and used to work with donkeys of his until he had paid fifteen thousand. Then a man came to him and said: "Are you mad? You are here tormenting yourself, while ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar buys slaves right and left and then frees them! Go back to him and tell him: I am unable." So he came to him with his document and said: "O Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, I am unable, and this is my document, so erase it." He said: "No, but erase it yourself if you wish." So he erased it, and the eyes of ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar overflowed with tears. He said: "Go, you are free." He said: "May God set you right, be kind to my two sons." He said: "They are both free." He said: "May God set you right, be kind to the two mothers of my children." He said: "They are both free." So he freed all five of them together in one sitting.
