The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent al-Walīd b. ʿUqbah b. Abī Muʿayṭ to Banū al-Muṣṭaliq to collect their zakāh from them. They met him with a gift. He returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said to him: "Banū al-Muṣṭaliq have gathered against you in order to fight you." So Allah, Blessed and Exalted, revealed: {إِنْ جَاءَكُمْ فَاسِقٌ بِنَبَإٍ فَتَبَيَّنُوا} – the verse.
