I entered upon ʿĀʾishah (may God be pleased with her), and she said: "Where are you from?" I said: "From the people of Egypt." She said: "How did you find Ibn Ḥudayj on this expedition of yours?" I said: "The best of commanders; whenever a horse or a camel of any one of us died, he replaced it for him with a camel in its place, and whenever a servant died, he replaced him with a servant." She said: "The fact that he killed my brother does not prevent me from relating to you what I heard from the Messenger of God ﷺ say: 'O God, whoever takes charge of any of the affairs of my Ummah and is gentle with them, be gentle with him; and whoever is harsh on them, be harsh on him.'"
