"I was sitting with the Prophet ﷺ when some people of Banū Tamīm came to him. He said: "Accept the glad tidings, O Banū Tamīm." They said: "You have given us glad tidings, so give to us, O Messenger of Allah." He said: Then some people from the people of Yemen came to him, and he said: "Accept the glad tidings, O people of Yemen, since Banū Tamīm did not accept them." They said: "We accept, O Messenger of Allah. We have come to gain understanding in the religion, and to ask you about the beginning of this matter, what it was." He said: "Allah, Mighty and Majestic, was, and there was nothing before Him, and His Throne was upon the water. Then He created the heavens and the earth, and wrote everything in the Remembrance." He said: And a man came to him and said: "O ʿImrān b. Ḥuṣayn, your mount! Catch your she-camel, for it has gone off." So I set off in search of it, and behold, the mirage was cutting off the view of it. By Allah, I wished that it had gone and that I had not stood up."

machine translationAmong the authentic (ṣaḥīḥ) hadiths is the hadith of ʿImrān b. Ḥuṣayn: "Allah was, and there was nothing other than Him."
machine translationAl-Aʿmash differed regarding which of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ this hadith goes back to. Al-Aʿmash mentioned that it was ʿImrān b. al-Ḥuṣayn, while al-Masʿūdī mentioned that it was Buraydah b. al-Ḥuṣayb. The correct view in our opinion is what al-Aʿmash said about it. What indicates this is that al-Thawrī narrated it from Jāmiʿ b. Shaddād, agreeing with al-Aʿmash and opposing al-Masʿūdī, even though he fell short of some of its text that is in their two narrations.
