He mentioned the story of the Miʿrāj, and in it he said: "Fifty prayers every day were made obligatory upon me." Or he said: "I was commanded with fifty prayers every day." The doubt is from Saʿīd. "Then I came until I reached Mūsā, and he said to me: What were you commanded with? I said: I was commanded with fifty prayers every day. He said: I have tested the people before you, and I dealt with the Children of Israel with the utmost effort, and your Ummah cannot bear that, so return to your Lord and ask Him for a reduction for your Ummah. So I returned, and He removed five prayers from me. I kept going back and forth between my Lord and Mūsā; every time I came to him he said to me the same as he had said, until I returned with five prayers every day. When I came to Mūsā he said to me: What were you commanded with? I said: With five prayers every day. He said: I have tested the people before you, and I dealt with the Children of Israel with the utmost effort, and your Ummah cannot bear that, so return to your Lord and ask Him for a reduction for your Ummah. I said: I have returned to my Lord until I am ashamed, but I am content and I submit. He said: Then I was called out to, or a caller called to me" — the doubt is from Saʿīd — "that I have enacted My obligation, and lightened it for My servants, and I have made for every good deed ten times its like."

  • Abū Ḥatim al-Rāzī

machine translationI asked my father about a hadith that Yūnus narrated from al-Zuhrī, from Anas, from Abū Dharr, from the Prophet ﷺ, concerning the Ascension (al-miʿrāj), and that Qatādah narrated from Anas, from Mālik b. Ṣaʿṣaʿah, from the Prophet ﷺ. It was said to my father: which of the two is closer? He said: I do not set anyone of the people of his era level with al-Zuhrī. Then he said: I hope that both are sound. Another time he said: the hadith of al-Zuhrī is more sound. I said to my father: they differed regarding al-Zuhrī. He said: Yes, some of them say, from al-Zuhrī, from Anas, from Ubayy b. Kaʿb, but al-Zuhrī from Anas from Abū Dharr is more sound.

  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationAl-Zuhrī narrates it from Anas; ʿUqayl and Yūnus related it from him. There is disagreement about Yūnus: Abū Ḍamrah said, from Yūnus, from Abū, and I think that "Dharr" dropped out for him, so he made it from Ubayy b. Kaʿb and was mistaken in it. Qatādah also narrated this hadith from Anas b. Mālik, from Mālik b. Ṣaʿṣaʿah, and he brought it in full. Shuʿbah narrated part of it from Qatādah, from Anas, from the Prophet ﷺ, the story of the two rivers; Ibrāhīm b. Ṭahmān related it from Shuʿbah. It seems that all the accounts are sound, because their narrators are reliable (athbāt).
