Abū Bakr (may God be pleased with him) used to command his commanders when he sent them out during the apostasy (ridda): "When you come upon a house and you hear the call to prayer in it, hold back until you ask them what they resent. If you do not hear the call to prayer, then launch a raid upon it, kill and burn, and be severe in killing and wounding, so that no weakness is seen in you because of the death of your Prophet."
