When the people of Medina renounced their allegiance to Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah, Ibn ʿUmar gathered his attendants and his freedmen. In the narration of Sulaymān: his attendants and his children. He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "A banner will be raised for every traitor on the Day of Resurrection." Al-Zahrānī added in his narration: He said: We have pledged allegiance to this man on the pledge of Allah and His Messenger, and I know of no treachery greater than that you pledge allegiance to a man on the pledge of Allah and His Messenger, and then raise war against him. I do not know of any one of you who has renounced allegiance or pledged allegiance in this matter, except that it will be the parting of ways between me and him.
