The sister of Zaynab bint Jaḥsh suffered from istiḥāḍah (irregular bleeding) for seven years. She would fill a basin of hers with water, then sit in it until the redness of the blood rose over the water. She asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for a ruling, and he said to her: "It is not a menstrual period, but rather a vein, so wash yourself and pray."

  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

machine translationThe reports in which she was commanded to perform a ritual bath (ghusl) for every prayer are narrated through several routes, all of them weak (ḍaʿīf).

  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

machine translationThere is much disagreement among the narrators from al-Zuhrī regarding this hadith. At times he narrates it from ʿAmrah from ʿĀʾishah, at times from ʿUrwah from ʿĀʾishah, at times from ʿUrwah and ʿAmrah from ʿĀʾishah, and at times from ʿUrwah from Fāṭimah bint Abī Ḥubaysh. Most of the students of Ibn Shihāb say in it: from ʿUrwah and ʿAmrah from ʿĀʾishah, that Umm Ḥabībah bint Jaḥsh, the in-law of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who was married to ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf, had irregular bleeding (istuḥīḍat). This is how they report it from Ibn Shihāb in this hadith: Umm Ḥabībah, without mentioning Fāṭimah bint Abī Ḥubaysh. The hadith of Ibn Shihāb on this subject is inconsistent (muḍṭarib).

machine translationIn Sulaymān b. Kathīr's narration from al-Zuhrī there is much inconsistency (iḍṭirāb), along with contradiction of the memorizers (ḥuffāẓ) among his companions.
