The Messenger of Allah ﷺ died while Abū Bakr ؓ was at al-Sunḥ. ʿUmar ؓ stood up and said: "By Allah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has not died." ʿUmar ؓ said: "By Allah, nothing occurred to my mind except that. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, will surely raise him, and he will surely cut off the hands and feet of men." Then Abū Bakr ؓ came, uncovered the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, kissed him and said: "May my father and mother be your ransom. You were pure in life and in death. By the One in whose hand is my soul, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, will never make you taste the two deaths." Then he went out and said: "O you who swear, take it easy." When Abū Bakr spoke, ʿUmar ؓ sat down. Abū Bakr praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: "Whoever worshipped Muḥammad, then Muḥammad has died. And whoever worshipped Allah, Mighty and Majestic, then Allah is Living and does not die." And he said: {إِنَّكَ مَيِّتٌ وَإِنَّهُمْ مَيِّتُونَ} And he said: {وَمَا مُحَمَّدٌ إِلا رَسُولٌ قَدْ خَلَتْ مِنْ قَبْلِهِ الرُّسُلُ أَفَإِنْ مَاتَ أَوْ قُتِلَ انْقَلَبْتُمْ عَلَى أَعْقَابِكُمْ} the whole verse. Then the people sobbed and wept. The Anṣār gathered around Saʿd b. ʿUbādah ؓ in the Saqīfah of Banū Sāʿidah and said: "From us a leader, and from you a leader." So Abū Bakr, ʿUmar and Abū ʿUbaydah b. al-Jarrāḥ ؓ went to them. ʿUmar began to speak, but Abū Bakr ؓ silenced him. ʿUmar ؓ used to say: "By Allah, I intended nothing by that except that I had prepared a speech which pleased me, and I feared that Abū Bakr ؓ would not reach it." Then Abū Bakr spoke, and spoke eloquently. He said in his speech: "We are the leaders and you are the ministers." al-Ḥubāb b. al-Mundhir said: "No, by Allah, we will never do that. From us a leader, and from you a leader." Abū Bakr ؓ said: "No, rather we are the leaders and you are the ministers. They are the best of the Arabs in homeland and the most noble of them in lineage. So pledge allegiance to ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb or Abū ʿUbaydah b. al-Jarrāḥ ؓ." ʿUmar said: "Rather, we pledge allegiance to you. You are the best of us, our master, and the most beloved of us to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." ʿUmar took his hand and pledged allegiance to him, and the people pledged allegiance to him. Then someone said: "You have killed Saʿd b. ʿUbādah." ʿUmar said: "Allah has killed him."
