In the blood-money for accidental killing there are five categories: five young male camels in their second year (banū makhāḍ), five female camels in their second year (banāt makhāḍ), five female camels in their third year (banāt labūn), five camels in their fourth year (ḥiqāq), and five camels in their fifth year (jidhāʿ).

machine translationThis is what is known from ʿAbdullāh b. Masʿūd through these chains of transmission. Some of our memorizers, namely Shaykh Abū al-Ḥasan al-Dāraquṭnī, narrated these chains from ʿAbdullāh and put banū labūn in place of banū makhāḍ, which is a mistake on his part. I have also seen it in the book of Muḥammad b. Isḥāq b. Khuzaymah, who is an imām, in the narration of Wakīʿ from Sufyān through his two chains, likewise as banū labūn; and in the narration of Saʿīd b. Bashīr from Qatādah from Abū Mijlaz from Abū ʿUbaydah from Ibn Masʿūd, likewise banū labūn. And he narrated it from the hadith of Yaḥyā, meaning Ibn Abī Zāʾidah, from his father and others, from Abū Isḥāq from ʿAlqamah from Ibn Masʿūd, as banū makhāḍ. If what these two narrated is preserved, then that is what we incline to, and the narrations from Ibn Masʿūd on this become contradictory. Yet the position of ʿAbdullāh on banū makhāḍ is well known. Abū Bakr b. al-Mundhir chose his position on this and argued that al-Shāfiʿī, may God have mercy on him, only adopted the view of the people of Medina on the blood-money for accidental killing because the people differed about it, and the Sunnah from the Prophet ﷺ came unspecified, as one hundred camels without elaboration, and the name 'camels' covers both young and mature ones. So he obliged the killer with the least that they said was obligatory upon him, and in his view the view of the people of Medina was the least that was said. It seems the view of ʿAbdullāh b. Masʿūd had not reached him. We found the view of ʿAbdullāh to be the least that was said on it, since banū makhāḍ are fewer in age than banū labūn and the name 'camels' covers them, so that is what is obligatory and not what exceeds it. It is also the view of a Companion, so it is preferable to that of others. And with God is success.
