({And those of you who die and leave wives behind, they shall wait by themselves for four months and ten days}) He said: This waiting period (ʿiddah) was observed in the household of her husband's family, and that was obligatory upon her. So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed: {And those of you who die and leave wives behind, a bequest for their wives, provision for a year without expulsion. But if they leave, there is no blame on you for what they do with themselves of what is recognised as right}. He said: Allah gave her nine months and twenty nights as a bequest: if she wished, she stayed in accordance with her bequest, and if she wished, she left. And that is the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: {without expulsion. But if they leave, there is no blame on you for what they do with themselves}. The waiting period remains as it is, obligatory upon her. Mujāhid claimed that.
