Hishām b. Ḥassān was asked about a man who accuses his wife of adultery. So Hishām b. Ḥassān narrated to us from Muḥammad, who said: I asked Anas b. Mālik about that, thinking that he had knowledge of it. He said: Hilāl b. Umayyah accused his wife of adultery with Sharīk b. Saḥmāʾ, who was the maternal brother of al-Barāʾ b. Mālik, and he was the first to take the oath of mutual imprecation (liʿān). So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ made the oath of imprecation between them. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Watch her. If she gives birth to him white, with straight hair, and with eyes of good shape, then he belongs to Hilāl b. Umayyah; and if she gives birth to him dark-eyed (kuḥl), with curly hair, and thin-shanked, then he belongs to Sharīk b. Saḥmāʾ." He said: Then I was informed that she gave birth to him dark-eyed, with curly hair, and thin-shanked.
