We were in the mosque on the eve of Friday when a man of the Anṣār entered and said: "If a man found another man with his wife, and he speaks, you would flog him; if he kills, you would kill him; and if he stays silent, he stays silent in rage. By God, I will ask the Messenger of God ﷺ about it." The next day he came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and asked him, saying: "If a man found another man with his wife and he speaks, you would flog him; or if he kills, you would kill him; or if he stays silent, he stays silent in rage." He said: "O God, grant a decision." And he kept on supplicating. Then the verse of mutual cursing (liʿān) was revealed: {And those who accuse their wives and have no witnesses except themselves} — these verses. So the man was tried by it out of all the people. He came with his wife to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and they performed the mutual cursing. The man testified four times by God that he was among the truthful, then the fifth time he invoked the curse of God upon himself if he was among the liars. Then she went to perform the curse, and the Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Stop!" But she invoked the curse. When they turned away, he said: "Perhaps she will bring him forth black and curly-haired." And she brought him forth black and curly-haired.
