The Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned Khadījah bint Khuwaylid — her father was reluctant to marry her to him. So she prepared food and drink and invited her father and a group of Quraysh. They ate and drank until they were intoxicated. Then Khadījah ؓ said to her father: "Muḥammad is asking for my hand, so marry me to him." So he married her to him. She perfumed him with khalūq and clothed him in a robe — and this was what they used to do for the fathers when they married off their daughters. When the drunkenness left him, he looked, and behold, he was perfumed with khalūq and wearing a robe. He said: "What is the matter with me?" She said: "You married me to Muḥammad b. ʿAbdullāh." He said: "Am I to marry off the orphan of Abū Ṭālib? No, by my life!" Khadījah said: "Are you not ashamed? Do you want to make a fool of yourself before Quraysh, telling people that you were drunk?" She did not cease with him until he agreed.
