Whoever among you holds on to his right, he shall have six shares for each person from the first fayʾ (spoils) we obtain, so return to the people their women and their sons. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ mounted and the people followed him, saying: O Messenger of God, distribute our fayʾ among us, until they pressed him against a tree and it snatched his cloak from him. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: O people, give me back my cloak. By the One in whose hand is my soul, if you had livestock as many as the trees of Tihāmah, I would distribute it among you, and then you would not find me stingy, nor cowardly, nor a liar. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ stood beside a camel, took a hair from its hump, placed it between his two fingers, and said: O people, by God, I have no share of your fayʾ, not even this hair, except the fifth, and the fifth is returned to you. So hand over the thread and the needle, for stealing from the spoils is a disgrace, a fire, and a shame upon its people on the Day of Resurrection. Then a man of the Anṣār came to him with a ball of hair threads and said: O Messenger of God, I took this to stitch the packsaddle of a camel of mine that has a sore back. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: As for my right in it, it is yours. The man said: If the matter has reached this point, I have no need of it. And he threw it from his hand.
