Ṣafiyyah bint ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib was in the fortress of Ḥassān b. Thābit when the Prophet ﷺ dug the trench. Ṣafiyyah said: A man from the Jews passed by us and began to circle around the fortress. So I said to Ḥassān: "This Jew is circling around the fortress as you see, and I do not feel safe that he might point out our weak spots. So go down to him and kill him." He said: "May God forgive you, O daughter of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib. By God, you know well that I am not the man for this." Ṣafiyyah said: When he said that, I girded myself and took a pole, then went down from the fortress to him and struck him with the pole until I killed him. Then I returned to the fortress and said: "O Ḥassān, go down and strip him of his belongings, for nothing prevented me from stripping him except that he is a man." He said: "I have no need of his spoils, O daughter of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib."
