I was sitting with ʿAlī ؓ when a man from Banū ʿIjl, called al-Mustawrid, was brought. He had been a Muslim and then became a Christian. ʿAlī ؓ said to him: "What is this?" He said: "I found their religion better than your religion." He said: "And what is your religion?" He said: "The religion of ʿĪsā - peace be upon him." ʿAlī ؓ said: "I too am on the religion of ʿĪsā - peace be upon him - but what do you say about ʿĪsā - peace be upon him?" Then he said a word that was hidden from me and I did not understand it, but the people claimed that he said: "He is his Lord." ʿAlī ؓ said: "Kill him." So the people trampled him until he died. He said: Then the people of al-Ḥīrah came and offered - meaning for his corpse - twelve thousand, but ʿAlī ؓ refused them and gave an order concerning it, and it was burned with fire, and he did not touch his property.
