A Bedouin came to the Prophet ﷺ with a lost item he had found, and he said: "Announce it for a year, then take note of its container (ʿifāṣ) and its string (wikāʾ). If someone comes and informs you about it, (give it to him); otherwise, spend it."

What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Abū Daʾūd

machine translation"If someone comes and informs you of its container (ʿifāṣ) and its string (wikāʾ); otherwise, spend it." This wording is not in the narration of most of them, so it seems to be not preserved (ghayr maḥfūẓ), as Abū Dāwūd said.

  • Zarqānī

machine translationThis lost item (luqaṭah) is sound, that is, the command to hand it over to the one who knows its container (ʿifāṣ) and its binding cord (wikāʾ), in the ḥadīth of Zayd.

  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationRabīʿah b. Abī ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrates it, and there is disagreement concerning him about it, from Yazīd, the freed slave of al-Munbaʿith, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ. Al-Layth b. Saʿd contradicted him and said: "Someone with whom I am satisfied narrated to me, from Ismāʿīl b. Umayyah, from Rabīʿah and others, from the freed slave of al-Munbaʿith, from a man from among the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." The preserved (maḥfūẓ) version is from Rabīʿah, from Yazīd, the freed slave of al-Munbaʿith, from Zayd b. Khālid al-Juhanī, from the Prophet ﷺ.
