A man kept close to a debtor of his over ten dinars, and said to him: "By God, I have nothing with which to pay you today." The creditor said: "By God, I will not part from you until you give me payment, or bring a guarantor who will take responsibility for you." He said: "By God, I have nothing to pay with, and I cannot find anyone to take responsibility for me." So he dragged him to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and said: "O Messenger of God, this man has kept hold of me, and I asked him for a delay of one month, but he refused until I pay him or bring him a guarantor. So I said: By God, I cannot find a guarantor, and I have nothing to pay with today." The Messenger of God ﷺ said to the creditor: "Are you asking him for a delay of only one month?" He said: "No." He said: "Then I will take responsibility for it on your behalf." So the Messenger of God ﷺ took responsibility for it, and the man went away, then came to him with the amount he had promised. The Messenger of God ﷺ said to him: "Where did you get this gold from?" He said: "From a mine." He said: "Go, we have no need of it; there is no good in it." He said: So the Messenger of God ﷺ paid it on his behalf.
