I came to the Prophet ﷺ asking him for help with a debt I had undertaken (ḥamālah). He said: "Begging is forbidden except in three cases: a man who has undertaken a debt (ḥamālah) for others, for whom begging is permissible until he pays it, and then he must refrain; a man struck by a calamity that destroyed his wealth, for whom begging is permissible until he obtains a means of support or a sufficiency of livelihood, and then he must refrain; and a man who has been struck by need or poverty, such that three sensible people of his own community testify to it, for him begging is permissible. Any begging other than that is unlawful gain (suḥt)."
