O people, you have introduced transactions of sale that I do not know what they are. Gold for gold, whether unminted or coined, weight for weight, hand to hand; and silver for silver, weight for weight, hand to hand; and it is not valid on credit. Wheat for wheat, a mudd for a mudd, hand to hand; and barley for barley, a mudd for a mudd, hand to hand. There is no harm in selling barley for wheat, with the barley being the greater of the two, hand to hand, but it is not valid on credit. And dates for dates, until he even counted salt for salt, like for like, hand to hand. Whoever gives more or takes more has engaged in usury.
