✧ I said to ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ: 'Tell me of the severest thing the polytheists did to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' He said: 'While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was praying in the courtyard of the Kaʿbah, ʿUqbah b. Abī Muʿayṭ came, seized the Prophet's ﷺ shoulder, twisted his garment around his neck, and choked him severely. Then Abū Bakr came, seized his shoulder, pushed him away from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and said: "Would you kill a man because he says: My Lord is Allah, when he has brought you clear proofs from your Lord?"'
