حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ عَنْ أَبِيهِعَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو

أَنَّ الْيَهُودَ كَانُوا يَقُولُونَ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ سَامٌ عَلَيْكَ، ثُمَّ يَقُولُونَ فِي أَنْفُسِهِمْ: لَوْلا يُعَذِّبُنَا اللهُ بِمَا نَقُولُ فَنَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ وَإِذَا جَاءُوكَ حَيَّوْكَ بِمَا لَمْ يُحَيِّكَ بِهِ اللهُ إِلَى آخِرِ الْآيَةَ

Translation

Chain of narrators

  3. ʿAṭāʾ b. al-Sāʾib
  4. Abīhiʿan ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAmr

✧ The Jews used to say to the Messenger of God ﷺ, “Sām ‘alayk” (poison be upon you), and then they would say within themselves, “Would that God punish us for what we say!” Then this verse was revealed: “And when they come to you, they greet you with what God has not greeted you with” to the end of the verse.
