✧ We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a man from the desert came wearing a jubbah of sijān fabric fastened with silk brocade. He said: Indeed, this companion of yours has put down every horseman son of a horseman. He means he wants to put down every horseman son of a horseman and raise every shepherd son of a shepherd. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took hold of the collar of his jubbah and said: Do I see upon you the clothing of one who does not understand? Then he said: When the Prophet of Allah Nuh ﷺ was near death, he said to his son: I will relate to you a bequest. I command you with two things and forbid you from two things. I command you with ‘There is no god but Allah,’ for if the seven heavens and the seven earths were placed in one scale and ‘There is no god but Allah’ in the other, ‘There is no god but Allah’ would outweigh them. And if the seven heavens and the seven earths were a solid ring, ‘There is no god but Allah’ would break them. And ‘Glory be to Allah and praise be to Him,’ for it is the prayer of everything, and by it creation is sustained. And I forbid you from shirk and pride. He said: I said, or it was said: O Messenger of Allah, we know shirk, but what is pride? Is it that one of us has two good sandals with two good straps? He said: No. He said: Is it that one of us has a garment he wears? He said: No. He said: Is it that one of us has a mount he rides? He said: No. He said: Is it that one of us has companions who sit with him? He said: No. It was said: O Messenger of Allah, then what is pride? He said: Scorning the truth and belittling people.
