✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me, along with al-Zubayr and al-Miqdad, saying: Go until you reach the garden of Khakh, for there is a woman with a letter. Take it from her. So we set off, our horses racing, until we reached the garden. There was the woman. We said: Bring out the letter. She said: I have no letter. We said: Either bring out the letter or we will strip off your clothes. So she brought out the letter from her braids. We took the letter and brought it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. In it was: From Hatib b. Abi Balta'ah to some people among the polytheists in Makkah, informing them of some of the affairs of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: O Hatib, what is this? He said: Do not be hasty with me. I was a man attached to Quraysh by alliance, not one of their own. Those with you among the emigrants had relatives who protected their families in Makkah. Since I lacked that kinship among them, I wanted to gain favor with them so they would protect my relatives. I did not do this out of disbelief, nor apostasy from my religion, nor acceptance of disbelief after Islam. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: He has told you the truth. Umar said: Let me strike the neck of this hypocrite. He said: He was present at Badr. And what do you know? Perhaps Allah looked upon the people of Badr and said: Do as you wish, for I have forgiven you.
