حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ وَسَمِعْتُهُ أَنَا مِنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ أَخْبَرَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ حَمْزَةَ أَخْبَرَنِي سَالِمٌ أَخْبَرَنِي ابْنُ عُمَرَ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أُتِيَ بِحَاطِبِ بْنِ أَبِي بَلْتَعَةَ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: أَنْتَ كَتَبْتَ هَذَا الْكِتَابَ ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ. أَمَا وَاللهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَا تَغَيَّرَ الْإِيمَانُ مِنْ قَلْبِي، وَلَكِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ رَجُلٌ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ، إِلَّا وَلَهُ جِذْمٌ وَأَهْلُ بَيْتٍ يَمْنَعُونَ لَهُ أَهْلَهُ، وَكَتَبْتُ كِتَابًا رَجَوْتُ أَنْ يَمْنَعَ اللهُ بِذَلِكَ أَهْلِي. فَقَالَ عُمَرُ: ائْذَنْ لِي فِيهِ، قَالَ: أَوَكُنْتَ قَاتِلَهُ ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، إِنْ أَذِنْتَ لِي. قَالَ: وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُ قَدِ اطَّلَعَ اللهُ إِلَى أَهْلِ بَدْرٍ فَقَالَ: اعْمَلُوا مَا شِئْتُمْ

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was brought Hatib b. Abi Balta‘ah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: Are you the one who wrote this letter? He said: Yes. By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, faith has not changed in my heart, but there was no man of Quraysh except that he had a clan and a household protecting his family for him, and I wrote a letter hoping that Allah would thereby protect my family. Umar said: Grant me permission regarding him. He said: Would you have killed him? He said: Yes, if you permitted me. He said: And what would make you know? Perhaps Allah has looked upon the people of Badr and said: Do as you wish.
