✧ I wrote to Nafi‘ asking him: What kept Ibn ‘Umar from going on military expeditions? And about the people when they raid, how do they call the enemy before fighting them? And may a man charge when he is in the battalion without the permission of his commander? He wrote back to me: Ibn ‘Umar used to send his sons on expeditions and provide mounts. He used to say: The best deed after prayer is jihad in the cause of Allah Almighty. Nothing kept Ibn ‘Umar from going on expeditions except the instructions of ‘Umar, young children, and many properties. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ raided Banu al-Mustaliq while they were unaware, watering their camels. He killed their fighters and took their women and children captive, and captured Juwayriyah bt. al-Harith. He said: Ibn ‘Umar narrated this hadith to me, and he was in that army. They used to be called only in the early days of Islam. As for the man, he does not charge the battalion except with the permission of his commander.
