Chain of narrators
  1. Wakīʿ and Ibn Numayr al-Maʿná
  2. al-Aʿmash
  3. Abū al-Ḍuḥá
  4. Masrūq

✧ While a man was narrating in the Grand Mosque, he said: When the Day of Resurrection comes, a smoke will descend from the sky and seize the hearing and sight of the hypocrites, and it will affect the believers like a cold. Masruq said: I entered upon Abdullah and mentioned that to him. He was reclining, and he sat up straight and began to narrate, saying: O people, whoever among you is asked about knowledge that he has, let him speak of it; and if he does not have it, let him say: Allah knows best. For it is part of knowledge to say about what you do not know: Allah knows best. Indeed, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said to His Prophet ﷺ: Say, "I do not ask you for any reward for it, and I am not one of the pretentious." When Quraysh overpowered the Prophet ﷺ and rebelled against him, he said: O Allah, help me against them with seven like the seven of Yusuf. He said: Then a year of famine seized them, in which they ate bones and carrion out of hardship, until one of them would see between himself and the sky what looked like smoke from hunger. They said: Our Lord, remove from us the punishment; indeed, we are believers. He said: It was said to him: If We remove it from them, they will return. So he called upon his Lord, and He removed it from them, but they returned. Then Allah took vengeance on them on the day of Badr. That is the meaning of His saying, Exalted is He: "So watch for the day when the sky will bring a visible smoke" up to His saying: "The day We seize with the greatest seizure; indeed, We will take retribution." Ibn Numayr said in his narration: Abdullah said: If it had been the Day of Resurrection, He would not have removed it from them.
