حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ وَيَزِيدُ قَالَا أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ عَوْنٍ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ قَالَ قَالَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ
كُنْتُ لَا أُحْبَسُ عَنْ ثَلَاثٍ قَالَ ابْنُ عَوْنٍ: فَنَسِيَ عَمْرٌو وَاحِدَةً، وَنَسِيتُ أَنَا أُخْرَى، وَبَقِيَتْ هَذِهِ عَنِ النَّجْوَى عَنْ كَذَا، وَعَنْ كَذَا. قَالَ: فَأَتَيْتُهُ وَعِنْدَهُ مَالِكُ بْنُ مُرَارَةَ الرَّهَاوِيُّ قَالَ: فَأَدْرَكْتُ مِنْ آخِرِ حَدِيثِهِ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنِّي رَجُلٌ قَدْ قُسِمَ لِي مِنَ الْجَمَالِ مَا تَرَى فَمَا أُحِبُّ أَنَّ أَحَدًا مِنَ النَّاسِ فَضَلَنِي بِشِرَاكَيْنِ فَمَا فَوْقَهُمَا، أَفَلَيْسَ ذَلِكَ هُوَ الْبَغْيُ؟ قَالَ: لَيْسَ ذَلِكَ بِالْبَغْيِ، وَلَكِنَّ الْبَغْيَ مَنْ سَفِهَ الْحَقَّ، أَوْ بَطِرَ الْحَقَّ، وَغَمَطَ النَّاسَ.

✧ I was not prevented from three things. Ibn 'Awn said: 'Amr forgot one, and I forgot another, and this one remained about private conversation, about such-and-such and such-and-such. He said: I came to him while Malik b. Murarah al-Rahawi was with him. He said: I caught the end of his speech while he was saying: 'O Messenger of Allah, I am a man who has been given a share of beauty as you see, and I do not love anyone to surpass me even by two shoelaces or more. Is that not arrogance?' He said: 'That is not arrogance. But arrogance is to reject the truth, or to scorn the truth, and to look down on people.'
