✧ Saʿd set out to perform ʿumrah and stayed with Ṣafwān b. Umayyah b. Khalaf. Umayyah, whenever he went to Syria and passed by Madinah, would stay with Saʿd. Umayyah said to Saʿd: "Wait until midday, when people are heedless, then go and circumambulate." While Saʿd was circumambulating, Abū Jahl came to him and said: "Who is this circumambulating the Kaʿbah safely?" Saʿd said: "I am Saʿd." Abū Jahl said: "You circumambulate the Kaʿbah safely, while you have sheltered Muḥammad?" They quarreled. Umayyah said to Saʿd: "Do not raise your voice against Abū al-Ḥakam, for he is the chief of the people of the valley." Saʿd said to him: "By God, if you prevent me from circumambulating the House, I will cut off your trade route to Syria." Umayyah kept saying: "Do not raise your voice against Abū al-Ḥakam," and kept restraining him. Saʿd became angry and said: "Leave us alone. I heard Muḥammad claim that he will kill you." He said: "Me?" He said: "Yes." He said: "By God, Muḥammad does not lie." When they went out, he returned to his wife and said: "Do you know what the Yathribī said to me?" He informed her. When the call to battle came and they went out to Badr, his wife said: "Do you not remember what your Yathribī brother said?" He wanted not to go out, but Abū Jahl said to him: "You are one of the nobles of the valley, so march with us for a day or two." He marched with them, and God, Mighty and Majestic, killed him.
