✧ When it was the day of Badr, he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'What do you say about these captives?' He said: Abu Bakr said: 'O Messenger of Allah, they are your people and your family; spare them and give them respite, perhaps Allah will relent upon them.' He said: And 'Umar said: 'O Messenger of Allah, they expelled you and denied you; bring them close and strike their necks.' He said: And 'Abdullah b. Rawahah said: 'O Messenger of Allah, look for a valley with much firewood and put them in it, then set fire upon them.' He said: Al-'Abbas said: 'You have severed your kinship.' He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered and did not respond to them with anything. He said: Some people said: 'He will take the view of Abu Bakr,' and some people said: 'He will take the view of 'Umar,' and some people said: 'He will take the view of 'Abdullah b. Rawahah.' He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to them and said: 'Indeed, Allah softens the hearts of men in it until they become softer than clay, and indeed, Allah hardens the hearts of men in it until they become harder than rocks. And your likeness, O Abu Bakr, is like Ibrahim ﷺ when he said: "Whoever follows me is of me, and whoever disobeys me, You are Forgiving, Merciful." And your likeness, O Abu Bakr, is like 'Isa when he said: "If You punish them, they are Your servants, and if You forgive them, You are the Mighty, the Wise." And your likeness, O 'Umar, is like Nuh when he said: "My Lord, do not leave upon the earth from the disbelievers a single dweller." And your likeness, O 'Umar, is like Musa when he said: "My Lord, harden their hearts so that they do not believe until they see the painful punishment." You are a burden, so let none of them escape except by ransom or a blow to the neck.' 'Abdullah said: I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, except Suhayl b. Bayda', for I have heard him mention Islam.' He said: And he fell silent. He said: I have never seen myself on a day more fearful that stones would fall upon me from the sky than on that day, until he said: 'Except Suhayl b. Bayda'.' He said: Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, sent down: "It is not for a prophet to have captives until he has made a thorough slaughter in the land. You desire the goods of this world, but Allah desires the Hereafter, and Allah is Mighty, Wise. Had it not been for a decree that preceded from Allah, a great punishment would have touched you for what you took."
