✧ ‘Alqamah came to Syria, prayed two rak‘ahs, and said: “O Allah, grant me a righteous companion.” He said: “So I sat with a man, and it was Abu al-Darda’. He said: ‘Where are you from?’ I said: ‘From the people of Kufah.’ He said: ‘Do you know how ‘Abdullah used to recite this letter: “By the night when it covers and the day when it appears and [by] what He created, the male and the female”?’ I said: ‘He used to recite it as: “By the night when it covers and the day when it appears and [by] the male and the female.”’ He said: ‘Thus I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recite it. These people kept at me until they nearly made me doubt.’ Then he said: ‘Is not among you the companion of the cushion and the toothstick—meaning ‘Abdullah b. Mas‘ud? Is not among you the one whom Allah protected through the tongue of His Prophet from Satan—meaning ‘Ammar b. Yasir? Is not among you the one who knows the secret, and no one else knows it—meaning Hudhayfah?’”
