✧ That Abū ʿAmr b. Ḥafṣ divorced her irrevocably while he was absent, and he sent his agent to her with barley. She was displeased with it. He said: “By God, you have nothing from us.” She came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and mentioned that to him. He said: “You have no maintenance from him.” He ordered her to observe her waiting period in the house of Umm Sharīk. Then he said: “That is a woman whom my companions visit. Observe your waiting period with Ibn Umm Maktūm, for he is a blind man; you can lay aside your clothes there. When you become lawful, inform me.” When she became lawful, she mentioned to him that Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān and Abū al-Jahm had proposed to her. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “As for Abū al-Jahm, he does not put down his stick. As for Muʿāwiyah, he is penniless with no wealth. Marry Usāmah b. Zayd.”
