حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ عُتْبَةَ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ
رَجَعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمِ حِينَ دَخَلَ مِنَ الْمَسْجِدِ، فَاضْطَجَعَ فِي حَجْرِي. فَدَخَلَ عَلَيَّ رَجُلٌ مِنْ آلِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَفِي يَدِهِ سِوَاكٌ أَخْضَرُ، قَالَتْ: فَنَظَرَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَيْهِ فِي يَدِهِ نَظَرًا عَرَفْتُ أَنَّهُ يُرِيدُهُ. قَالَتْ: فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، تُحِبُّ أَنْ أُعْطِيَكَ هَذَا السِّوَاكَ ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ. قَالَتْ: فَأَخَذْتُهُ فَمَضَغْتُهُ لَهُ حَتَّى أَلَنْتُهُ وَأَعْطَيْتُهُ إِيَّاهُ. قَالَتْ: فَاسْتَنَّ بِهِ كَأَشَدِّ مَا رَأَيْتُهُ يَسْتَنُّ بِسِوَاكٍ قَبْلَهُ، ثُمَّ وَضَعَهُ. وَوَجَدْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَثْقُلُ فِي حِجْرِي، قَالَتْ: فَذَهَبْتُ أَنْظُرُ فِي وَجْهِهِ فَإِذَا بَصَرُهُ قَدْ شَخَصَ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ: بَلِ الرَّفِيقَ الْأَعْلَى مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ. فَقُلْتُ: خُيِّرْتَ فَاخْتَرْتَ وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ ! قَالَتْ: وَقُبِضَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned that day when he entered from the mosque, and lay down in my lap. A man from the family of Abu Bakr came in to me with a green siwak in his hand. She said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked at it in his hand with a look by which I knew that he wanted it. She said: I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, would you like me to give you this siwak?' He said, 'Yes.' She said: I took it and chewed it for him until I softened it, and gave it to him. She said: He used it to clean his teeth as vigorously as I ever saw him use a siwak before, then he put it down. I found the Messenger of Allah ﷺ becoming heavy in my lap. She said: I went to look at his face, and his gaze was fixed, and he was saying, 'Nay, the Highest Companion from Paradise.' I said, 'You were given the choice, and you chose, by the One who sent you with the truth!' She said: And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away.

Isḥāq also narrated it from Yaʿqūb b. ʿUtbah, from al-Zuhrī. Maʿmar b. Rāshid narrated it from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUrwah, from ʿĀʾishah. Marzūq b. Abī al-Hudhayl, Isḥāq b.
