✧ While ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān was circumambulating the House, he suddenly said: “May God fight Ibn al-Zubayr! How can he lie about the Mother of the Believers and claim that he heard her say that the Messenger of God ﷺ said: ‘O ʿĀʾishah, were it not that your people have only recently left disbelief, I would demolish the House and add to it from the Ḥijr, for your people fell short in the building.’” Al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd Allāh said to him: “Do not say this, O Commander of the Believers, for I myself heard ʿĀʾishah say this.” He said: “You heard it?” He said: “I heard it.” He said: “Had I heard this before I demolished it, I would have left it as Ibn al-Zubayr built it.”
