حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنِ الْأَسْوَدِ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ
اشْتَرَيْتُ بَرِيرَةَ، فَاشْتَرَطَ أَهْلُهَا وَلَاءَهَا، فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: اشْتَرِيهَا، فَأَعْتِقِيهَا، فَإِنَّمَا الْوَلَاءُ لِمَنْ أَعْطَى الْوَرِقَ قَالَتْ: فَاشْتَرَيْتُهَا، فَأَعْتَقْتُهَا، قَالَتْ: فَدَعَاهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَخَيَّرَهَا مِنْ زَوْجِهَا فَاخْتَارَتْ نَفْسَهَا، وَكَانَ زَوْجُهَا حُرًّا.

✧ I bought Barirah, and her owners stipulated her wala' (allegiance) for themselves. I mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Buy her and manumit her, for wala' belongs to the one who gives the silver (i.e., pays the price).' She said: 'So I bought her and manumitted her.' She said: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called her and gave her the choice regarding her husband, and she chose herself. Her husband was a free man.'
