✧ I said: What do you think of the saying of God, Mighty and Majestic: 'Indeed, al-Safa and al-Marwa are among the rites of God. So whoever performs Hajj to the House or performs 'Umrah, there is no blame on him to go between them'? He said: I said: By God, there is no blame on anyone not to go between them. He said: 'A'ishah said: How bad is what you have said, O son of my sister! If it were as you have interpreted it, it would be: 'there is no blame on him not to go between them.' But it was only revealed because the Ansar, before they embraced Islam, used to consecrate themselves to Manat, the idol which they worshipped at al-Mushallal. Whoever consecrated himself to her would feel constrained from going between al-Safa and al-Marwa. So they asked the Messenger of God ﷺ about that, saying: O Messenger of God, we used to feel constrained from going between al-Safa and al-Marwa in the pre-Islamic era. Then God, Mighty and Majestic, revealed: 'Indeed, al-Safa and al-Marwa are among the rites of God' up to His saying: 'there is no blame on him to go between them.' 'A'ishah said: Then the Messenger of God ﷺ established the going between them as a Sunnah. So it is not proper for anyone to abandon going between them.
