حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ كُنَاسَةَ الْأَسَدِيُّ أَبُو يَحْيَى قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ

مَا اسْتَسْمَعْتُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَّا مَرَّةً، فَإِنَّ عُثْمَانَ جَاءَهُ فِي نَحْرِ الظَّهِيرَةِ، فَظَنَنْتُ أَنَّهُ جَاءَهُ فِي أَمْرِ النِّسَاءِ، فَحَمَلَتْنِي الْغَيْرَةُ عَلَى أَنْ أَصْغَيْتُ إِلَيْهِ, فَسَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ: إِنَّ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ مُلْبِسُكَ قَمِيصًا، تُرِيدُكَ أُمَّتِي عَلَى خَلْعِهِ, فَلَا تَخْلَعْهُ, فَلَمَّا رَأَيْتُ عُثْمَانَ يَبْذُلُ لَهُمْ مَا سَأَلُوهُ إِلَّا خَلْعَهُ، عَلِمْتُ أَنَّهُ مِنْ عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ الَّذِي عَهِدَ إِلَيْهِ

Translation

✧ I only listened to the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ, once. Uthman came to him at noon and I thought that he came to him regarding the matter of women, so jealousy led me to eavesdrop on them. I heard him say, "Indeed, Allah has given you a shirt that my nation wants you to take off. So do not take it off." When I saw Uthman giving them what they asked for except taking off the shirt, I knew that it was from the covenant of the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ, that he had entrusted to him.
