✧ A man asked him about the bath on Friday: is it obligatory? He said: No; whoever wishes may bathe. I will tell you about the origin of the bath. People were needy, they wore wool, and they watered date palms while carrying loads on their backs. The Prophet's ﷺ mosque was narrow with a low ceiling. People came in wool garments and sweated. The Prophet's ﷺ pulpit was short, only three steps. People sweated in their wool clothes, and their odors—the smell of wool—rose, so they bothered one another until their odors reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was on the pulpit. He said: O people, when you come to Friday, bathe, and let one of you touch the best perfume he has, if he has any.
