حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنِ الْأَسْوَدِ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ

كَانَ زَوْجُ بَرِيرَةَ حُرًّا، فَلَمَّا أُعْتِقَتْ - وَقَالَ مَرَّةً: عُتِقَتْ - خَيَّرَهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ، فَاخْتَارَتْ نَفْسَهَا، قَالَتْ: وَأَرَادَ أَهْلُهَا أَنْ يَبِيعُوهَا، وَيَشْتَرِطُوا الْوَلَاءَ، قَالَتْ: فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ: اشْتَرِيهَا فَأَعْتِقِيهَا، فَالْوَلَاءُ لِمَنْ أَعْتَقَ.

✧ The husband of Barirah was a free man. When she was freed—and he once said: she was manumitted—the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave her the choice, and she chose herself. She said: Her owners wanted to sell her and stipulate the wala'. She said: I mentioned that to the Prophet ﷺ, and he said: 'Buy her and set her free, for the wala' belongs to the one who manumits.'
